Summary of Research
Guide to Publications
My research has focused on the development of optimization and
intelligent system methods for large complex engineered systems,
primarily the electric power system. The power system consists of a
vast array of devices that interact, directly through electrical
connection and indirectly
through information processing. The engineering concerns are
how
to design and operate this system to meet economic,
reliability
and
social objectives and how to model the interactions between
the
flow of
information, the physical system phenomena, and the desired
performance. Modern
optimization and intelligent system methods show promise in their
ability
to address the complexities and uncertainties inherent in such large
scale
systems. Regulatory changes, introducing competition and the open
energy
markets, along with technological developments, such as, improved
power
electronics and new dispersed generation technologies, have created a
number
of new interesting challenges and the possibility of a fundamentally
different power grid.
As a guide to my publications, the list below organizes my research
around problems in: a) transmission and distributions systems b) power
system planning and market economics c) controls and distributed
generation systems and d) the performance analysis of complex
